The fungus Didymella holci (anamorph Phoma holci) is an ascomycete pathogen responsible for leaf spot disease in various grass species. As a specialized parasite, it targets the foliar parts of plants, interfering with their metabolic processes by inducing localized necrosis of plant tissues, which limits the plant's overall health and growth potential.
The host range of Didymella holci primarily encompasses grasses belonging to the Poaceae family, including several forage grass species and specific types of cereals. The disease often establishes itself in pastures or grasslands, acting as a potential reservoir for the pathogen to spread into neighboring crop fields when environmental conditions become favorable for spore germination.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear on leaves and leaf sheaths as scattered, necrotic lesions. These spots are initially chlorotic or light brown, often bordered by a distinct dark margin. As the fungus completes its life cycle within the host tissue, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within the dead tissue, serving as a reliable visual indicator for field diagnostics.
Pathogen development is strongly driven by moisture and temperature. Spore production and dissemination occur rapidly during periods of high humidity, heavy dew, and moderate temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Rain splash is the primary mechanism for local transmission, while the fungus survives the winter months as mycelium or pycnidia on dead plant debris, ensuring a source of inoculum for the next growing season.
The agricultural impact is defined by the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency. As the lesions expand and coalesce, the leaf surface area decreases, leading to diminished dry matter production, lower forage quality, and overall stunted development of the host plant. In severe cases, the entire foliage may wither prematurely, causing significant losses in yield and livestock feed quality.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize disease pressure:
- Implement long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's infection cycle.
- Practice thorough sanitation by burying or removing infected crop residues post-harvest.
- Ensure the use of pathogen-free, certified seed stock to prevent early field introduction.
- Apply systemic or contact fungicides during the active growth phase if the environmental risk index is high.
