This fungus acts as a parasite that disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the plant tissue.

The pathogen primarily affects the stems, petioles, and foliage of sensitive crop species. By penetrating the plant epidermis, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, extracting nutrients and causing localized cell death, which manifests as distinct lesions that expand over time as the colony grows.

Diagnostic symptoms are usually characterized by the appearance of discolored spots that turn dark brown or grey. As the disease progresses, these lesions often show small, black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) embedded in the necrotic tissue. This specific development is a clear sign of the pathogen’s reproductive phase.
