The fungus Didymella nigricans is an important plant pathogen that causes severe diseases in various brassica crops, commonly referred to as stem canker or leaf spot diseases. This fungus is a member of the Ascomycota phylum and is known for its ability to persist in plant debris and soil for extended periods, serving as a primary inoculum source for subsequent crops.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables. While it can attack young seedlings causing damping-off, it is most frequently observed on mature plants, causing significant economic losses in both quality and total yield of the produce.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as brown or dark grey spots on the foliage and stalks. As the fungus colonizes the plant tissue, it creates characteristic pycnidia, which appear as small, black, pinhead-sized structures within the necrotic lesions. Severe cases lead to premature defoliation, stunted plant growth, and sometimes total stem girdling, which results in the death of the entire plant.
The development and spread of Didymella nigricans are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are splashed by rainfall or irrigation water onto susceptible tissues, facilitating rapid spread within a field during wet seasons.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on hygiene and crop management. Key strategies include the rigorous removal and destruction of crop residues, where the fungus overwinter, and the implementation of long-term crop rotations to disrupt the pathogen's life cycle.
