Description
The disease known as Ascochyta blight is caused by the fungal pathogen Didymella pinodella. This is a severe fungal infection that primarily affects pulse crops, causing significant economic losses globally. The pathogen belongs to the Ascomycota division and is characterized by its high ability to persist in diverse environmental conditions.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are field peas, lentils, and vetch. The fungus thrives on crop residues left in the field and can survive in the soil for several years. Furthermore, seed-borne transmission is a critical pathway for the pathogen to spread into new areas, making certified healthy seeds a cornerstone of successful disease management.
Symptoms typically include dark brown or black lesions on the stems, leaves, and pods. When the infection occurs at the base of the plant, it often causes collar rot, leading to wilting and death of seedlings. Tiny black fungal structures called pycnidia appear within the spots, which are the main sources of secondary infection cycles during the growing season.
The development and spread of Didymella pinodella are heavily dependent on moisture. Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore release and germination. Warm, wet weather conditions during the flowering and pod-filling stages can lead to rapid disease progression and extensive damage to the crop canopy.
Effective prevention and control require an integrated approach. Farmers should implement long crop rotations, usually 3 to 5 years, to break the infection cycle. Fungicide seed treatments are essential to protect the emerging crop. During the vegetative stage, applying systemic fungicides can suppress disease spread, while selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars significantly minimizes the overall risk of yield losses.
