Didymella leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Didymella rhei, which primarily targets plants within the Rheum genus. This disease is known to affect both the leaves and stalks of rhubarb, leading to significant cosmetic and structural damage that can weaken the overall health of the plant.

The host range is predominantly limited to rhubarb. The fungus attacks foliage during the active growing season, particularly in dense plantings where canopy humidity remains high. The infection can lead to premature leaf drop and a decrease in the quality of the harvestable petioles if left untreated.

Visual symptoms include the development of necrotic spots on the leaf blades. These spots are often circular or irregular in shape, characterized by a light brown center surrounded by a dark brown or reddish-purple halo. As the disease progresses, tiny black structures called pycnidia appear in the center of the spots, releasing spores to spread the infection.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Didymella rhei. High moisture levels, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for spore germination and colonization. The pathogen survives the winter in infected crop residues, which serve as the primary inoculum for the subsequent growing season.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices are the first line of defense: removing and destroying all infected plant debris at the end of the season is essential to reduce the overwintering population of the fungus. Additionally, ensuring proper plant spacing and airflow helps keep the foliage dry.

When cultural control is insufficient, fungicide applications may be necessary to manage outbreaks. It is recommended to use products approved for use on edible crops. Regular monitoring during the spring and summer months allows for early detection, which significantly improves the chances of saving the crop from severe defoliation.
