The disease-causing agent is the fungal pathogen Didymella sancta, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. This pathogen primarily affects the stems, foliage, and fruit of various host plants, causing tissue necrosis and significant impairment of plant development. The fungus survives in soil and crop debris, using spores to spread rapidly during the growing season.

The host range includes a variety of vegetables and ornamental crops, often affecting nightshades and cucurbits. The pathogen typically enters the plant through micro-wounds or natural openings, colonizing the vascular system and internal tissues. Both young seedlings and mature plants are susceptible to infection under favorable conditions.

Symptoms initially appear as dark, depressed spots on the lower stems, leaf petioles, or fruit. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, developing a lighter-colored center marked by tiny, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia. The infected tissues eventually weaken, causing the plant to wilt, collapse, and potentially succumb to total dieback.

High humidity and temperatures ranging from +18°C to +25°C provide the ideal environment for the development and spread of Didymella sancta. Poor airflow in greenhouses and high plant density are major risk factors that facilitate spore dispersal. Rain splashes, contaminated irrigation water, and the use of infected gardening tools are common pathways for the transmission of the fungus.
