Description
Didymella blight is a significant fungal disease caused by various species within the Didymellaceae family. It is most notorious for causing severe damage to bramble fruits, such as raspberries, where it manifests as purple blotch or cane blight. The fungus is an obligate parasite that thrives on weakened plant tissues and persists in the soil and debris.
While raspberries (Rubus species) are the primary hosts for this pathogen, other related plants can also be susceptible. The fungus typically enters the host plant through wounds, natural growth cracks, or the base of leaf petioles. Once established, the mycelium invades the cortical tissues, disrupting the plant's vascular transport system.
Symptoms often appear in early summer as dark, purplish-brown lesions on the lower portions of the canes. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand, often causing the epidermis to crack and peel. By autumn, the affected canes often exhibit tiny, black, pimple-like structures, which are the pycnidia containing the fungal spores ready to be disseminated by rain or wind.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. Warm, wet springs and summers create optimal conditions for the production and germination of spores. Dense canopy growth and poor air circulation within the planting area exacerbate the spread of the infection, leading to rapid colonization of healthy canes.
The economic impact of Didymella blight is substantial, as it leads to the death of lateral fruiting shoots and significantly reduces winter hardiness, often resulting in complete cane dieback. Effective management requires a multifaceted approach:
- Strict sanitation by pruning and removing infected canes immediately after harvest.
- Maintaining proper spacing to ensure adequate sunlight and air movement.
- Avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization to prevent succulent, susceptible growth.
- Applying preventive and curative fungicides throughout the growing season.
- Utilizing disease-resistant cultivars whenever available in the local region.
