Didymosphenia (Didymosphenia geminata), commonly known as "rock snot," is a species of diatomaceous algae that has become a global environmental concern. While it is not a traditional plant pathogen, it acts as an invasive organism that profoundly impacts the quality of water systems, often affecting agriculture through degraded irrigation water sources.
The causative agent is a single-celled alga that produces extracellular stalks. Under specific environmental conditions, these stalks form dense, mucilaginous mats that cover riverbeds and submerged vegetation. This biological activity is often mistaken for a water-borne disease due to the rapid decline of healthy aquatic flora in infested areas.
Symptoms of an infestation are clearly visible as thick, carpet-like layers of brown or whitish slime coating rocks and stream bottoms. These mats can reach several centimeters in thickness, effectively suffocating native plant life, disrupting nutrient cycles, and creating an inhospitable environment for fish and other aquatic fauna.
The development of Didymosphenia is primarily linked to low-phosphorus freshwater environments. It spreads rapidly when cells are transported by humans. Fishing gear, waders, kayak hulls, and agricultural pumps are the main vectors for moving the algae from one water body to another, as the cells can survive in moist conditions for days.
The harm caused by this organism is significant, as it degrades water quality and alters the ecological balance. There is no known chemical or biological control method that can eradicate it without harming the wider ecosystem. Protection relies entirely on biosecurity measures: the "Check, Clean, Dry" protocol is mandatory for anyone moving equipment between different water sources to prevent further spread.
