Didymosphenia (Didymosphenia geminata), commonly known as "rock snot," is a species of freshwater diatom that forms extensive, dense mats in riverbeds and canals. While not a disease of terrestrial crops, it acts as a severe biological disruptor in agricultural water management, affecting the infrastructure required for large-scale irrigation and farm water supply.
The organism is a single-celled alga that produces thick, stalk-like structures made of extracellular polymeric substances. These stalks accumulate in mass, creating tough, leathery blankets that can cover meters of riverbed or pipe surfaces. Unlike typical algal blooms, these mats are dry and fibrous, sticking stubbornly to any surface they colonize.
In agricultural settings, the primary damage occurs through the fouling of infrastructure. These mats are drawn into intake valves, clogging irrigation screens, pumping stations, and drip irrigation emitters. This mechanical blockage significantly reduces water flow, leading to system failure, increased operational costs for cleaning, and potential crop stress due to irrigation shortages.
The development of Didymosphenia geminata is favored by stable, clear water conditions and specific nutrient profiles (often oligotrophic environments). Its ability to spread is extremely high; it is classified as an invasive species in many regions because it can survive for several days on equipment such as nets, boots, or water pumps, allowing it to "hitchhike" between river basins.
Effective management requires proactive intervention to stop the spread. Sanitation protocols are essential for any equipment that enters open water sources. If colonization occurs, chemical treatments are difficult due to environmental regulations, making physical cleaning and drying the primary lines of defense for farmers.
