Classified within the Pucciniomycetes group, this pathogen acts as a biotroph, extracting nutrients directly from the living cells of the host plant, which leads to metabolic disruptions and localized tissue damage.

The host range of this fungus is primarily restricted to certain tropical and subtropical plant species, particularly within the Clusiaceae family. Due to its host-specific nature, the pathogen can be persistent in nurseries and endemic regions, requiring constant monitoring to prevent the decline of susceptible plant populations.

Symptoms are identified by the development of pustules, which appear as wart-like growths on the leaves and sometimes the stems of the host. These pustules represent the fungal sporulation structures. As the infection progresses, these growths rupture the epidermis of the plant, releasing spores into the environment to initiate new infection cycles on healthy tissues.

Fungal development and spread are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The presence of water films on leaves is essential for spore germination and colonization. Consequently, dense canopy structures and poor airflow exacerbate the spread of the disease, allowing it to move rapidly throughout a plant population.
