These organisms exhibit a highly specialized lifestyle, focusing their metabolic activity on infecting and deriving nutrients from other fungi, particularly members of the subphylum Mucoromycotina, rather than attacking living plant tissues directly.
The disease type can be classified as hyperparasitism. The pathogen utilizes specialized haustoria to penetrate the cell walls of the host fungus, eventually leading to the degradation of the host's mycelium. This interaction is critical in soil ecology as it regulates the population dynamics of various fungi within the rhizosphere, which can indirectly impact plant development.
