The order Dimargaritales consists of obligate mycoparasites that belong to the phylum Zoopagomycota. Unlike traditional plant pathogens that attack vascular crops, these fungi specialize in parasitizing other fungi, primarily members of the Mucorales order. Their role in the soil ecosystem is complex, acting as biological regulators of various microbial populations.

The pathogens utilize specialized structures called haustoria to penetrate the hyphae of their host fungi and extract nutrients. This interaction is classified as mycoparasitism. Being obligate parasites, their life cycle is strictly dependent on the presence of a compatible host, which restricts their survival to environments where their hosts are abundant.

Symptoms of the infection include the stunted growth, distortion, and eventual lysis of the host fungal colonies. Since Dimargaritales do not directly infect the tissues of agricultural crops, field symptoms on the plant itself are rarely observed. Instead, the effects are manifested through changes in the microbial community composition within the rhizosphere.

Development and spread are favored by high moisture content and favorable soil temperatures, which are also conducive to the growth of their fungal hosts. Spores are primarily dispersed through soil moisture movement, soil-dwelling insects, and standard agricultural activities such as tilling or irrigation. Rapid colonization occurs when host density is sufficiently high.

The impact of Dimargaritales on agriculture is mainly indirect, involving the alteration of soil biodiversity and the potential suppression of beneficial fungi such as mycorrhizae. Management strategies focus on preserving soil health and preventing waterlogging.
