Dinobryon sertularia is a colonial golden alga that acts as an undesirable biological agent in hydroponic systems and aquaculture. While not a typical terrestrial pathogen, it represents a significant operational challenge in controlled-environment agriculture and intensive water management.
The organism forms tree-like colonies that can rapidly populate nutrient-rich water. In hydroponic setups or closed-loop irrigation systems, these algae accumulate on infrastructure, irrigation emitters, and plant root systems, often leading to mechanical clogging and biofilm formation.
Crops managed via hydroponic systems are the primary targets of the indirect damage caused by these algae. Mass proliferation leads to the depletion of oxygen and the release of metabolic byproducts, which disrupts the pH balance and reduces the nutrient uptake efficiency of the plant roots.
Signs of infestation include turbid, yellowish-brown water and a visible slimy film covering tank walls and submerged roots. The rapid die-off of these colonies often triggers secondary issues, such as anaerobic degradation, which significantly harms root health and plant vigor.
