Description
Diplodia citrus dieback is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Diplodia aurantii. This fungus is known for its ability to colonize woody tissues, leading to necrosis and gradual decline of citrus tree branches, which can eventually result in the death of the entire plant if left unmanaged.
The disease primarily affects various species within the Citrus genus, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. Citrus trees that are already under stress due to drought, frost injury, or poor soil conditions are significantly more susceptible to infection by this opportunistic pathogen compared to healthy, well-maintained trees.
Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of dark, sunken lesions on the bark of branches or the main trunk. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand, leading to branch girdling and leaf wilting. Small, black reproductive structures called pycnidia often erupt through the bark in infected areas, signaling heavy sporulation.
Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and warm temperatures significantly accelerate the development and spread of Diplodia aurantii. The spores are primarily disseminated by wind-blown rain and overhead irrigation, entering the plant through wounds caused by pruning, insects, or weather-related bark cracking.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key measures include maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation, as well as the immediate removal of infected branches, ensuring pruning cuts are treated with protective wound dressings. Preventive application of copper-based fungicides is essential for protecting trees in high-risk areas.
