Description
Diplodia bulgarica is a pathogenic fungus recognized as the causal agent of walnut diplodiosis. This disease is characterized by the formation of necrotic lesions on the bark, branches, and occasionally the trunks of walnut trees. By damaging the conductive tissues, the fungus disrupts the plant's vascular system, eventually causing branch dieback and overall tree decline if left unmanaged.
The primary host for this pathogen is the English walnut (Juglans regia). The fungus tends to target young twigs, lateral branches, and reproductive structures. In severe cases, the infection can spread throughout the entire canopy, significantly reducing the tree's vigor and the overall quality of the harvested nuts, often leading to substantial economic losses for orchardists.
Symptoms of the disease typically include darkening and discoloration of the bark, often followed by cracking or splitting. As the infection progresses, one can observe numerous small, black, pin-sized structures known as pycnidia breaking through the surface of the bark. These are the reproductive structures of the fungus. Affected leaves often wither, turn yellow, and drop prematurely, leaving branches bare.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Diplodia bulgarica. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for spore dispersal and germination. The pathogen often exploits wounds caused by pruning, hail, or insect feeding, making these entry points the primary focus for infection. Trees under stress from drought or nutrient deficiencies are significantly more susceptible.
Management and prevention require a multi-faceted approach. Gardeners and growers should prioritize strict sanitation by pruning and destroying infected wood to reduce the local spore count. Protecting pruning wounds with antifungal sealants is critical to preventing new infections. Additionally, implementing a regular spray schedule with copper-based fungicides during the dormant season and early spring can help suppress the fungal population and protect healthy tree tissue.
