Chestnut diplodia blight is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Diplodia castanea. It belongs to the group of canker-causing diseases that affect the vitality of chestnut trees. By colonizing the bark and the cambium layer, the fungus disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the dieback of branches and, in severe cases, the entire tree.

The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Castanea, particularly the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). While the fungus often behaves as an opportunistic pathogen, it can become highly destructive in orchards where trees are stressed due to poor environmental conditions or poor site maintenance. It also persists on dead wood, serving as a reservoir for infection.

Early symptoms include the appearance of sunken, necrotic areas on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions can expand and girdle the branch or trunk. Gummosis, or the oozing of sap, is frequently observed at the margins of the cankers. Foliage on infected branches often wilts, turns brown prematurely, and stays attached to the tree for some time after the branch dies.

The development and spread of Diplodia castanea are strongly influenced by high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed by splashing rain and wind. Infection occurs most easily through fresh wounds, such as those caused by pruning, insects, or environmental stress like drought. Once the fungus enters the vascular tissue, it grows rapidly during the growing season.

The impact of this disease is significant, resulting in reduced nut production and the gradual loss of the tree's structural integrity. Effective management strategies include:

  • Regular pruning of infected branches, ensuring cuts are made well into healthy tissue.
  • Sterilizing all pruning equipment with alcohol or bleach between trees.
  • Protecting tree trunks and major branches from mechanical damage.
  • Applying copper-based fungicide sprays as a preventative measure during high-risk seasons.
