Rice diplodia is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Diplodia oryzae. This disease represents a significant challenge for rice producers, as it targets the integrity of the plant structure and negatively affects the overall grain yield and quality.
The primary host for this pathogen is the rice crop (Oryza sativa). The fungus attacks various plant parts, primarily the stems, leaf sheaths, and reproductive structures, disrupting the nutrient transport system within the plant.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as dark, necrotic lesions on the stems and leaf sheaths. As the disease progresses, the tissues soften and decay. Visible characteristic black pycnidia (fruiting bodies) develop on the surface of the infected areas, serving as inoculum for further spread.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and warm temperatures. The fungus overwinters in plant debris and soil, facilitating primary infection during the subsequent growing season if appropriate sanitation measures are not taken.
The economic impact includes reduced crop vigor, lower yields, and inferior grain quality. Control strategies involve robust integrated pest management, such as the use of pathogen-free seeds, crop rotation, deep plowing to bury residues, and the application of fungicides during susceptible growth stages.
