Diplodia oak dieback is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Diplodia quercivora. This fungus primarily targets the vascular cambium and bark tissues of oak species, leading to severe branch dieback and trunk cankers. It is recognized as a significant threat to the vitality of oak forests and landscape trees globally, often contributing to rapid tree decline.

The disease primarily affects various species of the Quercus genus. The fungus is an opportunistic pathogen that thrives when trees are stressed by environmental factors, such as drought or excessive heat. Once established, the fungus colonizes the tree's vascular tissue, effectively choking off the supply of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the death of the affected parts or the entire tree.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions on branches and stems, which can lead to the peeling or cracking of the bark. Affected areas often develop dark, sunken cankers. On the surface of the infected bark, small, black fruiting bodies of the fungus may emerge, signaling the production of spores. In advanced stages, crown dieback becomes visible, characterized by wilting, chlorosis, and premature leaf drop.

Development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by the physiological condition of the host. Trees suffering from drought stress are particularly susceptible to Diplodia quercivora infection. The spores are typically dispersed by rain splash and wind, and they may also be introduced into the tree through insect-caused wounds or physical damage to the bark during storm events or human activity.

Management of this condition focuses on maintaining tree health and reducing pathogen pressure. Preventive strategies include:

  • Regular inspection of oak stands for early signs of infection.
  • Prompt pruning and disposal of infected branches to reduce spore load.
