Diploicia canescens is a species of crustose lichen that often grows on the bark of trees and shrubs. While frequently discussed in the context of plant health, it is technically an epiphytic organism rather than a true pathogen. It forms a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga, using the tree surface solely as a substrate for physical support.
This lichen is commonly observed on a wide range of hosts, including fruit trees like apple and pear, as well as various deciduous forest species. It thrives on mature trees, particularly those with rough, stable bark textures that provide long-term attachment sites, and is more common in established, older orchards.
The visual signs of Diploicia canescens include distinct, closely adherent grey to whitish-grey patches. These patches often feature a lobed margin and may contain small, black, disk-like apothecia in the center. These structures are reproductive organs and are often mistaken by growers for fungal disease fruiting bodies.
Development is heavily influenced by the microclimate. High humidity levels, poor air circulation within the tree canopy, and shaded environments favor the colonization and growth of this organism. While it does not directly feed on the tree’s sap, heavy colonization can potentially harbor pests and may slightly restrict the gas exchange of the bark.
Effective management focuses on improving tree vigor and microclimate. Key strategies include:
- Pruning to increase light penetration and air movement within the crown.
- Regular cleaning of the bark to remove dead layers and mosses.
- Maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization and watering.
