Diplomitoporus flavescens is a wood-decaying fungus that acts primarily as a saprotroph, specializing in the decomposition of coniferous wood. As a causal agent of white rot, this fungus plays a significant role in forest ecosystems by breaking down complex lignocellulose structures into simpler organic compounds.

The host range is predominantly restricted to coniferous tree species, particularly Pinus (pine) and Picea (spruce). It targets both standing trees, especially those weakened by environmental stress or physical injuries, and fallen timber. In the context of forestry, it is considered a pest that reduces the structural integrity and economic value of harvested timber.

Visual identification of the disease is facilitated by the presence of yellowish to cream-colored fruiting bodies on the bark of infected trees. Internally, the fungus causes the wood to bleach and become stringy, a classic characteristic of white rot. Over time, the wood loses its tensile strength and eventually crumbles, which can lead to structural instability of the host tree.
