Diploschistes is a genus of lichens that often colonizes the bark of trees and shrubs. While gardeners frequently mistake it for a plant disease, it is technically an epiphyte—an organism that lives on the surface of another plant without directly parasitic feeding. However, excessive growth can negatively impact the tree's bark health.

This lichen is typically found on older fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various forest trees with rough bark. It thrives on surfaces that provide stable moisture and sufficient shade, often appearing in neglected orchards where branches have become too dense to allow proper sunlight and airflow.

The symptoms of colonization include the appearance of crust-like patches, which may be grayish or white in color, often featuring distinct, small cup-like structures known as apothecia. Over time, these patches can become quite thick, preventing the bark from drying out quickly after rain and hindering the natural gas exchange required for healthy bark cells.

Diploschistes develops most rapidly in environments with high humidity and limited light exposure. The presence of these lichens often indicates a lack of proper canopy management. If the tree canopy is too dense, it traps moisture against the trunk and branches, creating the perfect microclimate for the spores of this lichen to settle and expand.

The primary concern regarding Diploschistes is that it provides a shelter for overwintering pests, such as scales and mites, and can harbor fungal spores. To manage it, arborists recommend mechanical cleaning of the bark using soft scrapers during dormant periods, followed by the application of horticultural washes or copper-based treatments to discourage regrowth.
