Description
Pathogen and disease type. The pathogen responsible for this condition is the fungus Discula brunneotingens, which is classified within the group of mitosporic fungi. It functions as a parasitic agent that targets the bark and cambial layers of host plants, triggering necrotic lesions that disrupt the tree's vascular health and overall physiological development.
Susceptible hosts. This fungus primarily impacts various broad-leaved tree species. It is frequently identified on walnut trees and other woody perennials within managed forests or orchard environments. Both young saplings and mature trees can serve as hosts, though younger tissues often show higher susceptibility to initial infection.
Symptoms and signs. Initial infection manifests as discolored, slightly sunken brown patches on the bark of twigs and stems. As the infection progresses, these areas develop into deep necrotic lesions, often resulting in bark cracking and tissue decay. Under humid environmental conditions, the fungus produces small, erumpent fruiting bodies, which appear as tiny dark pustules on the affected surface.
Development and spread. The fungus thrives in climates characterized by high moisture and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated via splashing rainwater, wind currents, and mechanical vectors. Infection is facilitated by the presence of bark injuries, such as pruning cuts, frost cracks, or pest damage, which allow the pathogen to enter the plant vascular system.
Harmfulness and protection. The disease causes progressive dieback, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and can lead to branch death or stunted growth. Essential control strategies include the surgical removal of infected branches and maintaining strict hygiene practices. Fungicidal treatments, particularly those based on copper, are effective when applied preventively to protect bark tissues during vulnerable growth periods.
