The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Discula kriegeriana, a well-known pathogen that primarily attacks trees of the genus Tilia (linden or basswood). It belongs to the group of fungi responsible for anthracnose and necrosis, significantly impacting both aesthetic and biological health of the host trees.
This pathogen specifically infects linden species, affecting trees in urban environments, public parks, and forest nurseries. Younger specimens are particularly susceptible, as they often lack the established vigor of mature trees, making them vulnerable to rapid decline when infection pressure is high.
Symptoms of the infection involve the appearance of dark brown or necrotic lesions on the leaves, which are often accompanied by a distinct margin. As the fungus progresses, it affects the twigs and branches, causing sunken cankers and resulting in dieback. Under humid conditions, fruiting bodies of the fungus appear as small, raised structures on the dead plant tissue.
The development and spread of Discula kriegeriana are heavily reliant on wet and warm conditions. Spores are primarily dispersed through rain splash, wind currents, and mechanical contact. Entry points into the host are typically through wounds, frost cracks, or natural openings in the plant tissue, where the fungus begins its colonization.
The economic and ecological impact includes premature defoliation, which reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity and weakens its resistance to environmental stressors. If left unmanaged, chronic infection can lead to the death of major scaffold branches.
