Description

Ditopella is a genus of fungi (Ascomycota) that causes specific necrotic diseases in various woody plants. The most noted species, Ditopella ditopa, acts as a pathogen primarily targeting the bark and twigs of its host species. By invading the cortical tissues, the fungus disrupts the transport system of the plant, eventually leading to the death of the affected parts.

The primary hosts for Ditopella species are alder trees (Alnus). The infection typically initiates through wounds or natural openings in the bark, such as lenticels. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the bark, consuming nutrients and creating conditions that allow the pathogen to produce its characteristic fruiting bodies, which appear as black, protruding dots.

Symptoms are easily identified by observing the bark of young branches. Initially, small, depressed lesions appear, which may turn into distinct cankers. As the fungus progresses, the bark becomes brittle, cracks, and eventually sloughs off. The foliage on affected branches often turns yellow prematurely and dies, leading to noticeable dieback in the tree canopy.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of this disease. Ditopella thrives in high-humidity environments, especially during cool, wet spring seasons. Poor air circulation and overcrowding in plantations or ornamental gardens significantly increase the risk of rapid spore dispersal, which occurs mainly via wind and rain splash.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. The most effective method is the physical removal and destruction of infected branches to reduce the amount of inoculum present. Maintaining tree vigor through proper site selection and watering is essential for prevention. In nurseries, fungicide treatments can provide additional protection during periods of peak susceptibility.
