The fungus Ditopella ditopa is an ascomycete pathogen known to cause leaf spot disease on alder trees (Alnus species). It is a host-specific parasite that primarily targets the foliage, significantly affecting the plant's photosynthetic efficiency during the active growing season.
This disease is widely found in various Alder populations, affecting both young seedlings in nurseries and mature trees in forest ecosystems. The fungus exploits the host's leaf tissue to complete its life cycle, relying on the availability of nutrients within the host leaves.
The visual symptoms typically appear as small, dark brown or black spots scattered across the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, these lesions may develop a lighter halo. Small black protrusions, representing the fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus, can be observed erupting through the epidermis, primarily on the underside of the leaves.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture acts as a catalyst for spore dispersal, allowing the pathogen to spread efficiently from infected leaves to healthy foliage via wind and rain splashes.
The negative impact of Ditopella ditopa involves premature defoliation, which weakens the tree's health and reduces its capacity to store energy for the subsequent growing season. Management strategies emphasize cultural practices, such as clearing fallen leaf litter to eliminate the pathogen's overwintering sites, and the selective use of fungicides in controlled environments to protect young growth.
