The family Diversisporaceae is not a plant disease. These fungi are essential components of the soil microbiome that establish a symbiotic relationship known as arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM). They are beneficial partners that colonize the roots of diverse plant species, including major crops like wheat, maize, and legumes.

The fungus develops specialized structures called arbuscules within the root cortical cells. Through these structures, the plant trades photosynthetic sugars for essential nutrients gathered by the fungal mycelium from the soil. This symbiosis effectively extends the reach of the root system, accessing soil pores that roots cannot penetrate.

Farmers do not observe damage symptoms; instead, the presence of these fungi is indicated by vigorous plant growth, dark green foliage, and high tolerance to environmental stress. These fungi act as bio-enhancers, helping crops thrive in nutrient-poor conditions and protecting against water scarcity by maximizing the efficiency of water uptake.

Conditions that favor the development of Diversisporaceae include minimal soil disturbance and the avoidance of high-input synthetic fertilizers. Frequent tillage can disrupt the fungal network in the soil, while excessive phosphate applications often discourage the plant from maintaining its symbiotic relationship with the fungi.
