Doassansiopsis is a genus of smut fungi (order Ustilaginales) known for infecting various aquatic and semi-aquatic plants. These pathogens are primarily specialized, targeting specific plant families that thrive in wetland or pond conditions, often causing visible hypertrophy in the infected tissues.
The host range of Doassansiopsis primarily includes members of the Alismataceae family, such as Sagittaria and Alisma species. The fungus infects the leaves and petioles, where it develops internal spore-producing structures that significantly disrupt the normal physiological function of the host plant.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of localized galls or thickened spots on the leaves. These lesions often start as discolored, chlorotic areas. As the fungal spores mature inside, the spots become firm, swollen, and eventually turn dark brown or black, leading to the gradual necrosis of the leaf area around the infection site.

The fungus utilizes motile zoospores to travel through the water column and reach healthy plant tissues.
