Dothidea is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division, responsible for causing various necrotic diseases in woody plants and shrubs. These pathogens are known for colonizing the bark and stems, leading to significant physiological stress and structural damage to the host plant over time.

The host range of Dothidea includes a wide variety of ornamental shrubs and fruit-bearing trees. Common hosts include species like Crataegus (hawthorn) and Cotoneaster. The fungus primarily targets the cambium layer, disrupting the essential flow of water and nutrients, which can eventually lead to branch dieback.

The visual symptoms of a Dothidea infection include the formation of small, dark, raised structures known as ascostromata on the bark surface. As the fungus spreads, the affected bark becomes cracked, discolored, and necrotic. In severe cases, the infected branches may completely wither, leading to a thinning of the foliage.

The disease thrives in conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which favor spore production and dissemination. Rain and wind are the primary vectors that carry spores from infected areas to healthy tissues.
