Description
Dothidea blight is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Dothidea insculpta. This pathogen primarily affects the bark and woody tissues of various trees and shrubs, leading to localized necrosis and, in severe cases, the death of branches or entire plants.
The fungus is commonly found on various ornamental and fruit-bearing shrubs, including currants and gooseberries. It behaves as a latent parasite, frequently exploiting plants that have been weakened by adverse environmental conditions, poor soil quality, or physical damage to their bark structure.
The most visible symptoms of the disease are small, shiny, black, erumpent stromata that appear on the surface of the bark. As the fungus matures, these structures rupture the host's epidermis, making the bark look cracked and distressed. This disrupts the translocation of nutrients and moisture, eventually leading to dieback.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Dothidea insculpta include high humidity, stagnant air, and frequent rainfall. The spores are typically dispersed by wind, splashing water, or insects, which land on vulnerable bark areas, particularly those damaged by frost, sunscald, or pruning cuts.
The impact of this disease can be significant, causing reduced vitality and potential yield loss. To manage Dothidea blight, a combination of cultural and chemical controls is required. Proper pruning practices, maintaining plant vigor, and applying copper-based fungicides during the early spring or dormant season are considered the most effective protective measures.
