The Dothideaceae family encompasses a wide range of ascomycetous fungi known primarily for their role as plant pathogens. These organisms belong to the class Dothideomycetes and are characterized by the production of ascomata embedded in a stroma, commonly referred to as pseudothecia, which serve as their primary reproductive structures for surviving unfavorable environmental conditions.
These fungi act as parasites on a variety of hosts, including fruit trees, vineyards, cereal crops, and ornamental plants. Depending on the species and the host plant, they cause a range of symptoms, most notably leaf spots, stem cankers, and necrosis of fruit tissues, which directly impacts the overall health and yield potential of the crop.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots of various colors and sizes, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, the tissues may become brittle or fall out, leading to shot-hole symptoms. The presence of small, dark, pimple-like reproductive structures on the lesions is a common morphological feature of the infection.
The development and spread of Dothideaceae pathogens are heavily dependent on climatic factors such as prolonged humidity, moderate temperatures, and frequent precipitation. Spores are easily disseminated by wind and rain splash, moving from primary inoculum sources (such as fallen debris or dormant wood) to healthy plant tissue during the growing season.
Effective management and control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Key practices include improving orchard or field hygiene to reduce inoculum levels, such as the removal and destruction of infected plant debris. Additionally, cultural practices like pruning for air circulation and the timely application of preventative fungicides are essential to limit the spread of these fungal infections.
