Dothideomycetes is a massive class of Ascomycete fungi that includes many of the most significant plant pathogens. They are characterized by the production of pseudothecia, which contain bitunicate asci. These fungi are responsible for a wide range of diseases including leaf spots, blights, scabs, and cankers that impact global agriculture.

These pathogens attack a vast array of hosts, including essential cereal crops, fruit trees, ornamentals, and vegetables. By infecting leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, they can cause significant yield loss, reduced produce quality, and in some cases, the total death of the host plant tissue.

The symptoms of infection typically manifest as localized spots, often with chlorotic halos, that gradually expand and necrotize. As the fungal colonies mature, tiny dark fruiting bodies appear on the surface of the lesions. These structures are crucial for the long-term survival of the fungus and the production of new infectious spores.

The spread of Dothideomycetes is largely driven by environmental factors, particularly high humidity, rain, and moderate temperatures, which favor spore dispersal and germination. Wind-driven rain is a common vector for spreading spores from lower infected leaves to the upper canopy. The fungi often survive through the winter in crop debris, fallen leaves, or dormant woody tissues.

Managing these diseases requires an integrated pest management approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, residue destruction, and sanitation are vital for reducing initial inoculum. When infection pressure is high, the application of chemical fungicides, targeted at specific stages of the fungal life cycle, is often necessary to protect crop yields.
