The fungus Dothiora taxicola is a significant pathogen responsible for bark and shoot necrosis in various conifer species. It is primarily identified as an ascomycete fungus that colonizes the cortical tissues, leading to the disruption of water and nutrient transport systems within the host plant.

The primary host for this fungus is the Yew tree (Taxus baccata). The pathogen thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity and poor aeration. Trees that are stressed due to improper watering, poor soil drainage, or physical injuries are significantly more susceptible to infection and rapid colonization by this fungus.

The visual symptoms typically include chlorosis (yellowing) followed by browning of the needles, usually starting from the base of the branches. Close examination of the affected bark reveals small, dark, pimple-like fruiting bodies (ascomata). As the disease progresses, shoot death occurs, leading to stunted growth and a significant loss of needles.

Transmission of the fungus primarily occurs via spore dispersal through splashing rain and wind. Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, they germinate and penetrate the bark, establishing internal colonies. The economic and aesthetic impact is severe, as mature trees can lose their canopy density, leading to the decline of the plant's overall health and vigor.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as pruning out infected branches, improving tree spacing, and ensuring adequate air circulation are crucial for prevention. Chemical control using preventive fungicide sprays containing copper or systemic active ingredients can help suppress the spread of the pathogen during wet, favorable growth periods.
