Description

Dothistroma needle blight is a significant fungal disease affecting various coniferous species, primarily caused by the pathogens Dothistroma septosporum and Dothistroma pini. It is a major concern in both forest management and ornamental nurseries, often causing severe needle drop and stunted growth.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are pine species, although it can occasionally infect other conifers such as spruce and larch. The disease is particularly damaging in regions with high rainfall and warm temperatures, which favour the production and dispersal of fungal spores.

Clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of small, dark, reddish-brown spots on the needles. These spots often develop into bands that encircle the needle. As the disease progresses, the distal part of the needle turns brown or yellow and eventually drops off, causing thinning of the tree crown starting from the bottom branches.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental factors. The spores are primarily dispersed by rain splash and wind. Once they land on healthy needles, they require high humidity and moderate temperatures to germinate and penetrate the stomata of the needle tissue, where they begin to colonize the host.
