Pathogen and disease type: Dothistroma needle blight is a severe fungal disease caused by Dothistroma septosporum (previously referred to as Dothistroma pini). This pathogen affects the needles of pine trees, leading to premature needle drop and significantly impairing the physiological health of the host tree by reducing its photosynthetic capacity.

Host plants and damage: The disease primarily affects species of the Pinus genus, with notable susceptibility observed in Austrian pine, Ponderosa pine, and Mugo pine. While mainly impacting pines, the fungus can occasionally be found on other conifers if the environment is conducive to its survival. Nursery stock and young plantations are particularly vulnerable to rapid infection cycles.

Symptoms and signs: Initial symptoms typically include the development of small, water-soaked spots on the needles, which eventually transition into dark red or brown bands. As the infection progresses, the foliage yellows and dies, typically starting from the base of the crown and spreading upwards. Close inspection reveals small black fruiting bodies of the fungus emerging through the epidermis of the affected needles.

Conditions for development: The pathogen thrives in humid, cool to moderate climates with frequent rainfall. Rain splashes facilitate the dispersal of conidia from the infected lower needles to the upper parts of the crown or neighboring trees. Dense canopy structures that prevent leaf drying after precipitation exacerbate the risk of a widespread outbreak within a forest stand.

Prevention and control: Effective management involves silvicultural practices such as thinning stands to improve air circulation and pruning the lower branches to reduce the amount of inoculum available. Protective sprays using copper-based fungicides are standard for managing outbreaks in high-value plantations or nurseries. Long-term prevention is best achieved through site-specific species selection to avoid planting highly susceptible pines in high-risk environments.
