Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoe

The causal agent is Arceuthobium douglasii, a small parasitic flowering plant that belongs to the Santalaceae family. Unlike fungi, this organism is a plant parasite that penetrates the host's bark and phloem to extract water and nutrients, which significantly weakens the tree's physiological status.

The primary host for this parasite is the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). While it shows extreme specificity to this species, the impact on stands of Douglas fir can be devastating due to the rapid spread of the parasite within the canopy and between adjacent trees.

Typical symptoms of infection include the development of witches' brooms, which are dense, stunted clusters of distorted branches. Infected trees also exhibit swellings or cankers at the site of infection and a noticeable decrease in height growth and overall vigor as the parasite drains nutrients.

The parasite spreads through the explosive discharge of sticky seeds, which can be propelled several meters to land on the branches of healthy trees. Once attached, the seeds germinate and the radicle penetrates the host tissue, establishing a vascular connection that sustains the parasite for many years.

Economic damage is substantial, particularly in timber production areas. The infection causes wood quality loss, reduced growth rates, and increased susceptibility to secondary infestations by bark beetles and pathogens. Over time, heavy infestations can result in the mortality of entire forest segments.

Management and protection strategies focus on silvicultural intervention. This includes the removal of infected overstory trees before they can infect the understory, pruning of infected branches, and the creation of harvest buffers. Maintaining stand diversity is also a key strategy in reducing the prevalence of dwarf mistletoe in managed forests.
