Drechmeria blight is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the genus Drechmeria. These fungi are biologically complex organisms that function both as specialized plant pathogens and as entomopathogenic agents that can infect soil nematodes. Their dual nature makes them a significant subject of research in both soil microbiology and commercial crop protection.
The host range of Drechmeria includes various agricultural crops, ornamental plants, and vegetables. The infection typically targets the root system and the crown of the plant, disrupting water and nutrient transport. This interference leads to significant physiological stress, often resulting in sudden wilting or stunted growth patterns observed during the vegetative stage.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as necrotic lesions on roots and the lower stem region. Affected tissue often turns dark, becomes soft or mushy, and may eventually collapse. Under high humidity, a fungal mycelium or sporulation layer may appear on the surface of the lesions, facilitating the spread of spores through irrigation water, wind, or agricultural equipment.
Environmental conditions are the primary driver of disease outbreaks. The pathogen thrives in high-moisture environments and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. It survives harsh conditions by forming specialized resting structures within the soil profile, allowing it to persist for multiple seasons until a susceptible host is available for colonization.
