Willow leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Drepanopeziza salicis, which specifically targets species within the Salicaceae family. The fungus acts as a parasite that exploits the leaf tissue for its nutrition and reproductive cycle.
The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of numerous small, dark brown, or black spots on the leaves. These spots are often irregular in shape and may eventually merge, leading to extensive necrosis of the leaf blade. Within these spots, the fungus develops its fruiting bodies (acervuli), which appear as tiny, distinct pustules visible upon close inspection.
