Description

Drepanopeziza sphaerioides is a fungal pathogen responsible for brown leaf spot, a prevalent disease affecting various willow species (genus Salix). It is an ascomycete fungus that primarily colonizes the leaf tissues, significantly impacting the aesthetic and physiological health of the trees.

The disease targets leaves, petioles, and occasionally green shoots of willow trees. It is particularly problematic in nurseries, landscape plantings, and riparian zones where environmental conditions favor the development of fungal spores during the spring and summer seasons.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, dark brown or black spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and coalesce. Inside the lesions, small disc-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, develop and release spores that are disseminated by water splash and wind to healthy parts of the tree.

Development and spread of the fungus are closely linked to high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The pathogen overwinters primarily in the fallen leaf debris beneath the trees. In the following spring, these old leaves release spores, creating a cycle of infection that can persist throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by this disease manifests as premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis. Severe and repeated infections over several years can lead to stunted growth, dieback of twigs, and an overall reduction in the tree's resistance to other environmental stressors.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • Strict sanitation: Raking and removing fallen leaves in the autumn to eliminate overwintering inoculum.
  • Cultural practices: Pruning and thinning branches to improve airflow and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
  • Chemical control: Applying appropriate fungicides during the early leaf expansion period to prevent initial infection.
  • Monitoring: Conducting regular inspections of the foliage, especially in moist and cool climatic conditions to ensure early detection.
