Dumontinia tuberosa is a pathogenic fungus that causes a specific type of sclerotinia rot, primarily affecting spring-blooming plants such as Anemone nemorosa and Anemone ranunculoides. This fungus is widely recognized in plant pathology for its complex life cycle, which involves the formation of resilient sclerotia that persist in the soil for several years.
The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus that thrives by infecting the host's rhizomes and roots. During early spring, when soil moisture is high, the dormant sclerotia germinate to produce apothecia, which are small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge from the soil surface to release spores into the environment.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as sudden wilting and chlorosis of the foliage. As the fungus colonizes the plant base, the tissues soften and develop a noticeable necrotic rot. In humid conditions, a visible white mycelium may appear at the base of the stems, leading to the rapid collapse of the entire plant.
The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and cool temperatures during the growth phase of the host. Spores are dispersed through wind and splashing rain, enabling the pathogen to infect new plants and establish the disease in previously healthy garden areas.
