Dwiroopa punicae is a specific fungal pathogen that affects pomegranate trees (Punica granatum). Classified within the Ascomycota group, this fungus induces necrotic lesions on the aerial parts of the plant, potentially leading to significant reductions in overall fruit yield and tree health.

The host range of this disease is restricted primarily to pomegranate. While the infection manifests most noticeably on the leaf blades, severe outbreaks can impact young shoots and stems. This damage disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, resulting in stunted growth and compromised plant vigor.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of circular or irregular dark-colored spots on the leaves. As the disease advances, the fungal structures (fruiting bodies) become visible within these necrotic areas. Eventually, the infected leaf tissue turns yellow and shrivels, which often leads to premature defoliation of the canopy.

Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the development and spread of Dwiroopa punicae. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed through rain splashes, wind currents, and the accumulation of infected leaf litter under the trees, where the pathogen can persist during the off-season.

Effective management requires an integrated strategy, starting with rigorous sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of fallen leaves and pruned materials. Preventive applications of copper-based fungicides at the onset of the growing season are recommended to inhibit the spread of spores and provide a protective barrier for healthy plant tissue.
