The fungus acts as an obligate parasite, invading the host tissue and replacing the plant's reproductive structures with its own spore mass, which severely compromises the plant's biological yield and overall vitality.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include various grasses and cereals. The fungus typically colonizes the host's ovaries or inflorescences. As the infection progresses, the plant's normal growth patterns are disrupted, and the expected seed production is replaced by the development of fungal sori, rendering the affected plant sterile and unfit for harvesting.
