Echidnodes hypolepidis is a fungal pathogen known to affect various species of ferns, specifically those within the Hypolepis genus. As an ascomycete fungus, it acts as a leaf-spotting agent that thrives by extracting nutrients from the host plant's tissues, eventually causing necrotic lesions.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are ferns inhabiting humid, shaded environments. While the disease might not be fatal in the short term, the accumulation of lesions inhibits photosynthesis and severely weakens the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Symptoms typically manifest as distinct spots or patches on the fronds. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of flattened, dark, shield-like fungal fruiting structures called thyriothecia. These structures often align with the leaf venation, creating a distinct linear or dispersed pattern across the infected leaf surface.

The development and spread of Echidnodes hypolepidis are highly dependent on environmental humidity. High moisture levels, frequent rain or overhead irrigation, and stagnant air are the primary drivers for spore germination and colonization.
