Description
Echinodontiaceae is a family of basidiomycete fungi primarily recognized for their role as wood-decaying pathogens. The most prominent member, Echinodontium tinctorium, known as the Indian paint fungus, is a significant agent of heart rot in mature coniferous forests, causing long-term damage to timber resources.
The primary hosts of these fungi include various species of conifers, especially firs and hemlocks. The fungus targets the heartwood of the tree, usually entering through branch stubs, broken tops, or wounds in the bark that expose the inner wood layers to fungal spores and mycelial colonization.
The visual symptoms typically involve the emergence of perennial, hoof-shaped, or shelving fruiting bodies on the trunk surface. Internally, the disease causes severe decay, resulting in the decomposition of the wood structure, which leads to structural instability of the tree and makes it highly susceptible to windthrow and stem breakage.
The development of the disease is favored by humid environments and the presence of older trees with cumulative physical injuries. The fungal mycelium spreads slowly but surely throughout the heartwood, consuming structural components of the tree until the infection is well-established, often making the damage irreversible by the time external signs appear.
The detrimental impact of Echinodontiaceae is most significant in terms of forest economic value and safety management. Effective control measures rely on forest hygiene and silvicultural practices, including the proactive removal of infected trees during thinning operations, minimizing damage during logging activities, and maintaining a healthy forest structure to promote natural resilience against fungal decay.
