Echinosphaeria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Sordariomycetes class. In agricultural and forestry contexts, certain species of this genus are identified as pathogens capable of causing necrotic lesions on woody plants and various agricultural crops. They are often opportunistic, taking advantage of plants already stressed by environmental factors or mechanical injuries.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes broad-leaved trees and woody shrubs. In orchards and nurseries, the presence of Echinosphaeria can lead to the decline of specimen health. It targets the bark and cambial layers, disrupting the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water effectively, which eventually leads to the dieback of affected branches.

Symptoms typically manifest as dark, discolored patches on the bark. As the disease progresses, these areas become sunken, and small, dark fruiting bodies (perithecia) appear on the surface of the dead wood. If left unchecked, the tissue necrosis expands, resulting in the wilting of foliage and eventual death of the affected plant parts.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture levels. Periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and poor air circulation within the canopy provide optimal conditions for the colonization of spores. Furthermore, the fungus readily enters through wounds caused by pruning, insect damage, or severe weather conditions, facilitating rapid infection.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, particularly in young plantations where individual plant health is critical for overall productivity and long-term yield. The cumulative loss of biomass and branch structure can lead to severe structural failures and reduced aesthetic value.

  • Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
  • Sterilizing all pruning tools between plants to prevent cross-contamination.
