Echinosphaeria canescens is a species of fungi in the class Sordariomycetes, often associated with the decomposition of woody plant tissues. In agricultural and forestry pathology, it is recognized as a facultative parasite or saprotroph that can impact the vitality of trees by colonizing bark and cambium layers under specific environmental conditions.

The host range of this fungus includes various deciduous tree species, such as Fagus (beech) and Acer (maple). It is particularly prevalent in forest stands where trees have been compromised by mechanical injury, environmental stress, or insect activity, making them susceptible to secondary fungal colonization.
