The causative agents are highly specialized fungi that grow on the cuticle of the host. The fungal thallus penetrates the insect's body, absorbing nutrients from the hemolymph. This parasitic relationship is detrimental to the host, leading to reduced reproductive success and eventually the death of the insect.
