Ectophoma is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the Ectophoma genus, which are known to cause necrotic lesions on various plant species. As a group of fungi, they primarily spread through pycnidia, producing spores that serve as the main inoculum for recurring infections in agricultural fields. Understanding the biological cycle of this pathogen is crucial for effective farm management.
This disease predominantly targets members of the Brassicaceae family, including oilseed rape, cabbage, and mustard. While it can occur on various herbaceous plants, its impact is most significant in commercial cruciferous crops. The pathogen can infect all parts of the plant, including stems, leaves, pods, and roots, depending on the environmental conditions and the developmental stage of the host.
The visual symptoms typically involve the development of gray or brown spots on the leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these spots develop small, dark-colored pycnidia, which are a characteristic feature of the disease. In severe cases, the infected tissue becomes brittle and may crack, causing the stem to collapse or the plant to wither prematurely, significantly impacting development.
Environmental factors such as high humidity and moderate temperatures (roughly 18°C to 25°C) are the primary drivers of disease spread. Spores are easily disseminated via wind, rain splash, or contaminated farming equipment. Because the pathogen can persist on plant debris, continuous cropping of susceptible varieties significantly increases the risk of soil-borne infection.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to minimize economic losses caused by Ectophoma. Key control measures include:
- Applying fungicide seed treatments to eliminate primary inoculum.
- Implementing strict crop rotation cycles, avoiding cruciferous crops for several seasons.
