Eggplant mosaic

Eggplant spp.

Description

Pathogen and disease type. Eggplant mosaic is a systemic viral disease caused by various strains of mosaic viruses, including the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). These pathogens colonize the plant's vascular system, disrupting critical biological processes, including nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which leads to general systemic infection.

Affected crops. This virus primarily affects plants within the Solanaceae family. While eggplant is highly susceptible, the disease also poses a significant threat to sweet pepper, tomato, and potato crops. Wild solanaceous weeds often serve as asymptomatic reservoirs, maintaining the virus in the environment throughout the year.

Symptoms and signs of infestation. The characteristic sign of the disease is a mosaic pattern on the leaves, consisting of alternating patches of light green, yellow, and dark green tissue. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe deformation. Fruit development is negatively impacted, resulting in mottled, malformed, or undersized produce that is commercially unviable.

Conditions for development and spread. The virus spreads rapidly through mechanical transmission, often during routine farming operations like pruning, staking, or harvesting via contaminated tools. Furthermore, sap-sucking insects, particularly aphids and thrips, act as primary vectors by feeding on infected plants and transferring the virus to healthy ones in the field or greenhouse.

Protection and prevention measures. Because there is no effective chemical cure for plant viral diseases, management focuses on strict preventative strategies. Producers should source certified virus-free seeds, implement rigorous tool sanitation protocols, and maintain strict control over pest populations. Furthermore, early detection and immediate removal of symptomatic plants are essential to prevent the secondary spread of the virus within the crop.
