Eggplant mosaic is caused by the Eggplant mosaic virus (EMV), which is classified under the genus Tymovirus. It is a viral phytopathogen that primarily affects plants within the Solanaceae family. The virus particles feature an icosahedral structure and contain single-stranded RNA, which contributes to their high environmental stability and ability to rapidly colonize host tissues systemically.

Host range and symptoms
The primary host for this pathogen is the eggplant (Solanum melongena). However, the virus can also infect tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various weed species that act as natural reservoirs. Symptoms manifest as distinct mosaic-like mottling on leaves, deformation of leaf blades, stunting, and general physiological decline of the affected plant.

Biology and life cycle
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical means, such as contact between plants or via contaminated tools during routine agricultural activities like pruning. Insects, particularly leaf-feeding beetles (such as species of Altica), play a critical role in the transmission cycle. These vectors pick up the virus while feeding on infected tissue and transmit it to healthy plants, facilitating rapid spread within crop fields or greenhouses.

Conditions for development and economic impact
The disease thrives under warm conditions, especially when populations of insect vectors are high. Early infection can prevent the plant from producing marketable fruits. The overall economic impact is severe, potentially resulting in yield losses of 50-80%, poor fruit quality characterized by surface mottling and discoloration, and premature plant senescence, which significantly reduces the grower's profitability.

Management and control measures
Because there is no curative treatment for viral infections, management must focus on strict preventative strategies:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free seeds or transplants.
  • Rigorous sanitation and disinfection of pruning tools and equipment.
  • Systematic removal and destruction of weeds to eliminate potential viral reservoirs.
  • Active monitoring and management of insect vector populations using appropriate insecticides.
  • Implementing crop rotation and maintaining spatial separation from other solanaceous crops.
