Eichleriella is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Auriculariales. In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is recognized as a wood-decay fungus that primarily affects the bark and sapwood of deciduous trees. While often saprotrophic, these fungi can behave as weak parasites on stressed or weakened trees, causing structural degradation of the wood.

This pathogen targets a variety of broadleaf trees, including many orchard species. The susceptibility of a tree to infection is significantly increased by external factors such as mechanical damage, pest activity, harsh winter conditions causing bark splitting, or lack of proper pruning sanitation, which allows the fungus to gain entry into the tree's vascular system.

Symptoms of an Eichleriella infection are typically visible as leathery, resupinate, or shelf-like fruit bodies growing directly on the surface of the bark. These structures often display zonate coloration. Internally, the affected wood shows signs of decay, becoming soft and friable as the fungal mycelium breaks down the structural integrity of the timber.

The development and dispersal of this pathogen are highly dependent on moisture and humidity levels. High ambient humidity, combined with favorable temperatures, promotes the production of spores. These spores are dispersed by wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible sites on the bark where they germinate and colonize the tissue, especially in the absence of rapid tissue healing.

Integrated disease management is essential to prevent the spread of this fungus in orchards and plantations. The following measures are crucial:

  • Strict sanitation by removing infected branches and deadwood.
  • Application of antifungal dressings to all pruning cuts and tree wounds.
  • Enhancing tree vigor through balanced fertilization and correct irrigation practices.
  • Implementing pest control programs to reduce secondary bark injuries.
  • Proactive monitoring and immediate removal of any detected fungal fruiting bodies.
